.

CRAPl'ER I

GENERAL DISCUSSIONS

Main street in Naturita, Colo.

.

Water Resources

Stream systems

The San Miguel River and its tributaries are the source of nearly all
water in the project area. The streams are fed primarily from melting
snows in high mountain headwaters and their flows fluctuate widely from
year to year and season to season.

The San Miguel River rises in the San Miguel Mountains and flows
northwest about 65 miles to its junction with the Dolores River about 4
miles below Uravan. The Dolores River in turn flows northwest to its
confluence with the Colorado River in eastern Utah.

Throughout most of its length the San Miguel River is confined in a
deep narrow gorge. In the vicinity of the project the river is joined by
several tributaries which cut northward across project lands. The largest
of these tributaries are South Fork of San Miguel River, and Fall, Specie,
Saltado, Beaver, and Naturita Creeks, all of which are perennial streams,
and Broad Canyon and Dry Creek which have only intermittent flows. East
Paradox Creek, an intermittent stream that flows ~orthwest to the Dolores
River, also drains part of the project area.

Data on streams of particular importance to project development are shown
an the following page.

.

T
