"Ill

"Ill

..

As indicated by the Regional Land Use plan for Huerfano-
Las Animas Counties, July 1976, the area is beginning to show
vital signs of growth. The transportation pattern and increased
traffic volumes provide an indicator of greater business activity.
The railroad activity on the main north-south lines shipping coal
from Wyoming to Texas is having an impact. The creation of the
Trinidad Dam, just a few miles west of Trinidad, has renewed in-
terest in retirement communities and tourists' activities. All
of this will create jobs and support a growing population with
many families desiring to live in a small community, such as
Starkville.

~

~

~
,

~

~
..

Population Development

The population is studied in terms of the town limits of
Starkville, the small area just south of the town known as South
Starkville, and an area just north of town referred to as Greekvi1le.

~

!!!!

A house count was made on September 21, 1976, of the Stark-
ville area. In Starkville there is a total of 67 housing units
available with present occupation of about 48 units. There are
two (2) bars, and one church. The school building is currently
under plans for rehabilitation as a neighborhood facility.

-
I
I
I

Greekville has about 51 housing units with about 42 units
presently occupied. In South Starkville there are available 25
units with 18 units occupied, and the potential of some commercial
usage of several units.

I
I

In all cases the unoccupied units would require considerable
rehabilitation but they do indicate the potential of future
growth. A meeting with the citizens of the area indicates 48
families in Starkville with a population of 114, South Starkville
has 20 families and Greekvi1le has 42 families. A discrepancy
is noted in the memory of the citizens on the boundary limits and
existing families. In Starkville alone the number of families
agree with the occupied housing count. Interpretation of the
data provides a population of 324 in the Starkville area with
the following breakdown: Starkville 114, Greekville 147, and
South Starkville 63.

-

8
