CHAPTER I - GENERAL INFORMATION

Project Map

The enclosed project map shows the location of the facilities
owned by the Summit Reservoir and Irrigation Company (Summit) rela-
tive to the Town .of Dolores, Lost Canyon Creek, and the Dolores
River.

State Highway 184 runs from NW to SE through the project
area. Lands irrigated by Summit are shown. Summit Reservoir is
the focus of this study and is located at about the center of the
map.

Location

The facilities owned by Summit and the irrigated lands are
located in the northeast quadrant of Montezuma County in Southwest
Colorado. The facilities extend over 16 miles between the Lost
Canyon Creek on the north and the Mancos River or McElmo Creek on
the south. The highest elevation of the diversion system is about
9,000 feet MSL; the irrigated lands are about 7,100 feet elevation.

Summit Reservoir is located seven miles northwest of the Town
of Mancos, seven miles southeast of the Town of Dolores; and
twelve miles northeast of the Town of Cortez. Cortez is the
county seat for Montezuma County. Mesa Verde National Park is six
miles directly south of the reservoir.

Summit Reservoir is located at elevation 7,400 feet on a
ridge between three drain'ages. The north' part of the reservoir
would drain to Lost Canyon Creek, a tributary of the Dolores,'
River. The south and east part of the reservoir drains to the
Mancos River and the west part drains to McElmo Creek. The
reservoir has ,about 350 surface acres when full and is a popular
fishing and sail boarding facility.

The setting of the reservoir is very scenic with the La Plata
Mountains to the east, the Mesa Verde cliffs to the south, and the
Sleeping Ute Mountain to the west. Several dozen summer homes
have been constructed around or near the reservoir to take advan-
tage of the scenery.

Climate

The climate in the Summit area is typical for the lower
mountains of Colorado. The mean temperature is about 480F with an
average high of 880F and an average low of 140F. The typical
growing season is from about May 1 to October 15.

-4-
