Mr. Edward McRae, Secretary
Summit Reservoir and Irrigation Company
P.O. Box 1387
Cortez, CO 81321

I

Dear Ed:

4

This letter is written to express the support of the Colorado Division of Wildlife
for plans by the Summit Reservoir and Irrigation Company to repair the outlet works
and dike at Summit Reservoir in 1983-84. In addition to its importance as a'n Irri-
gation reservoir, Summit is valued by fishermen as a warmwater fishing lake.

Because of excessive reproduction of. northern pike, Summit Reservoir is unbalanced
as a fishery. Summit is presently underuti I ized .by fishermen, ostensibly because of
this fishery imbalance and the resulting poor fishing. From May-September 1980, It'
was estimated that Summit Reservoir provided 1,040 fishing days.

To rehabilitate the'fishery and improve.fishing opportunities, the Division of Wild-
life will treat Summit Reservoir with rotenone starting 'in mid-September, 1983 to
.. er'adicate all fish present. After chemical reclamation, Summit will be managed
primarily as a smallmouth bass-crappie fishery, with rainbow trout stocked as an
interim measure until ~armwater fish reach catchable siz~. By 1988, it is projected
that Summit Reservoir will provide 5,000 man days of fishing.

.j, As you can see, the Division of Wildlife will be making a substantial cOlM1itment of
resources to improve fishing opportunities at Summit Reservoir in the near future.
On'behalf of the Division of Wildlife, I support and encourage the plans of the
Irrigation Company to complete repair work at Summit Reservoir.

Sincerely,

, ,
fJ?4w

Mi chae 1 Japhet
Fisheries Biologist

MJ:ked
cc Harris 'Water Engineering
Mike Zgainer

DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, Monle Pascoe, Executive Director.
