Map unit: BI

Blackston gravelly loam, 2 to 5 percent slopes

Description Category: AGR

Agronomic

This unit is suited for irrigated hay and pasture. The main limitation Is sandy and
gravelly underlying materiaL Deep cuts can expose sand, gravel, and stones which will
cause problems with furrow irrigation and cultivation practices, Furrow, drip, and
sprinkler irrigation is suited to this soil. Irrigation water needs to be applied at a rate
that Insures optimum production without increasing deep ',)er~atioo, ru\1off. and
erosion, Use of pipe reduces water loss and deep percolation. Due to the rapid
penneability of these soils below 20 inches, increased deep percolation could increase
the potential for leaching fertilizer and pesticide into the groundwater, Tilth and fertility
can be improved by returning crop residue \0 the soil and using a suitable
rotation. Excessive cultivation can result in the formation of a tillage pan. This pan can
be broken by subsoiling when the soil is dry. Because of the undulating topography and
slope, onsite investigations are needed before leveling, Care should be t
aken in leveling designs to avoid cuts into unsuitable soil material.

Description Category: XCS Capability Subclass

Capabilily Subclass 3S; lnigaled; 7S; noninigated

Description Category: ZCS Class Legend

Capability classification is the grouping of soils to shaw. in a general way, their
suitability for most kinds of farming. It is a practical classification based on limitations of
the soils, the risk of damage when they are used. and the way they respond
to treatment. The soils are classified according to degree and kind of pennanent
limitation, but without conslde1'ation of maiOJ and generaYly expensive landfonning that
would change the slope, depth, or other characteristics of the soils; without consider
ation of possible unlikely major reclamation projects.
Class 1!I - Severe limitations that reduce cholce of cro~s 01' fequ\re ~tia\ t.Of'lSeNs\ion
practices or both.
Class VII. Not suited for cultivation. Very severe limitations. Suited for range.
woodland or wildlife uses if carefully managed. Usually cannot apply physical practices
such as PItting, furrowing, seeding, etc,
S. Major problem is in the soil. It may be too shallow, too heavy. stony, low in fertility,
salty, alkaline or have low moisture capacity.
Description Category: TPF Prime Farmland

This unit is considered prime fannland.

Description Category: SOl Soil

This unit consists of very deep. well drained soils on old terrace remnants. These soils
fanned in old alluvium derived dominantly from mixed sources and have a loess cap.
The surface layer is gravelly loam 3 Inches thick. The upper 5 inches of the subs
oil are loam, and the lower 6 inches are clay loam, The upper 14 inches of the
substratum are very gravelly loam and very gravelly sandy loam, and the lower part to a
depth of 70 inches is gravelly sandy loam, extremely gravelly sandy loam. and very
grave
fly loamy coarse sand. Permeability of this soil is moderate in the upper 14 inches and
rapid below 14 inches. Avaiiable water capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 60
inches or more. Runoff is medium, and the hazard of water erosion is moderate,

Thunday, May 15, 1000

Page 4 0[9
