Dear Sir,

1) Currently the calculated maximum carrying capacity
through the existing structures and culverts is 25 cfs.
2) The calculated maximum carrying capacity of the unlined
canal upstream of the project is 165 cfs. A pipe to handle this
flow would need to be a 54 inch concrete, a 72 inch corrugated
metal pipe; or a 7 foot by 5 foot corrugated metal arch.
3) I have done some preliminary research on the costs of
this project. a} For the 54 inch concrete I was quoted $78/lin ft
or $39,000 delivered, and given a estimated cost of installation
of $39/1in ft or $19,500. The inlet and outlet structures might
add another $5,000 to $10,000. Removal of existing conduit and
structures could run $5,000 for a total of $65,000 to $73,500. b}
For the 72 inch (14 guage) corrogated metal pipe I was quoted
$44.30/1in ft or $22,150 delivered. The installation could run
$35/1in ft or $17,500, plus the inlet/outlet structureS - $5,000
to $10,000, and removal of t~e existing conduit, for a total of
$49,000 to $55,000. c} For the corrugated metal arch (12 guage) I
was quoted $8Z.70/lin ft or $41,350 delivered. The installation
could run $39/lin ft or $19,500, plus structures, and removal of
old. The total then could reach $65,000 to $72,000.
The estimated cost of just replacing the exipting
delivery system with a 24 inch pipe would be approximately $20
per linear foot ($20 x ~OO'= $10,000), plus the entrance and exit
structures as well as removal of existing structures/conduit. The
total 'cost 'might reach $15,000 to $22,000.
4) The , calculated maximum nonerosive flow of the soil type
in the project area is 60 cfs. If one of the above pipes were to
be installed to handle flood flow (canal maximum), there is the
potential for erosion downstream of the project. This is already
a concern at the downstream end of the present conduit/culvert
with the existing flows, and one of the factors as stated by you
that influenced your need to replace it. '.

The Natural Resources Conservation Service works hand-in-hand
with the American people to conserve natural resources on
private lands.

The USDA-NRCS is
An Equal Opportunity Employer
