The Rockfill Dam with Impervious Core is recom-
mended because of its lower cost. The availabil-
ity of materials as determined by the soils inves-
tigations may result in an alternate choice.

The extremely short construction season result-
ing from the high altitude of the site may have an
adverse effect on the construction costs. The speed
of construction may require additional equipment
that would not ordinarily be required or the con-
struction may require two construction seasons.

D. Alternatives Considered

In the preliminary stages of this study, alter-
native size and location for the proposed dam were
considered. A 1000 acre foot structure was considered
at the proposed site with the result that a 2000
acre foot structure would be more cost effective.
In addition, analysis of the water requirements shows
that a 1000 acre-foot structure would not meet the
needs of this project. An alternative site was
considered at the same location in which the USPS
gaging station on Arapahoe Creek was installed. The
cost of excavation at this site caused it ,to be ,:'1
eliminated from consideration unless a reservoir
of over 4000 acre feet capacity were to be developed.
There is insufficient surface water to fill a reser-
voir of this size at that location.

:1

"'1

'~" I

i
,

-37-
