I

I

I
I
I

The calculations in which minimum required diversions are determined take into
account the number of acres of land which are irrigated, the distribution of the
irrigated land among various crops, effective rainfall which partially meets crop
water requirements, conveyance losses in the canals and ditches of the irrigation
system, and on-farm efficiency of use of water,

I

The minimum required diversions can be compared to total diversions to determine
a full water requirement: for any given month and area, the larger of the two (the
actual diversions or the calculated minimum diversion requirement) is considered
to be the full water requirement (demand for water), The results of this analysis
demonstrate that, in the past, irrigators have been diverting as much water as
possible when available because shortages would frequently occur in the late
irrigation season. For this reason, they had a tendency to over divert in the spring,
With the proposed project, however, water will be delivered throughout the
irrigation season and it is reasonable to assume that irrigators will divert amounts
closer to their needs. For this reason, the calculated minimum diversion
requirements were used for analyses and in operation studies in this report,

I
I

I

I
I

I
I
I

The demand for water in the Tongue Creek basin was determined by calculating the
"Minimum Diversion Requirement", The minimum diversion requirement (DR) from
a stream is the amount of water required to meet the crop irrigation requirement
and to account for the on-farm and system efficiencies, The crop irrigation
requirement (CIR) takes into account the number of acres of land which are
irrigated, the distribution of irrigated land among various crops, the consumptive
use of each crop and effective precipitation which partially meets the crop
consumptive use.

I

The minimum diversion requirement in acre-feet was calculated for each month
within the growing season, from April to October, using the following relationship:

I
I
I
II

DRi =

(C1Ri )
Ef.
