<br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />CHAPTER III <br /> <br />HYDROLOGY <br /> <br />Section I: Introduction <br /> <br />The primary focus of the present study is on the hydrological aspects of irrigation <br />improvements in the Tongue Creek basin, The principal purposes of the hydrologi- <br />cal analyses were: <br /> <br />o To examine how water has been used in the Tongue Creek basin and in <br />neighboring basins. <br /> <br />o To determine the quantities of unused water available for development, <br /> <br />o To evaluate the extent and degree of severity of shortages of water for <br />meeting crop irrrigation requirements, by month, during the growing season, <br /> <br />o To establish long-term runoff values for streams in the study area. <br /> <br />The shortages to be addressed in this study were those which occurred in many <br />years, especially years of lower than normal stream flows, Furthermore, many of <br />the irrigators experienced shortages, particularly those whose water rights have a <br />moderate-to-Iow rank compared to senior water rights. The shortages typically <br />occur during the second half of the growing season, <br /> <br />Water supply and demand were examined, to some extent, in previous studies. In <br />this study, the analysis of water supply and demand was refined with regard to <br />degree of detail, by using data covering a longer period of years, and by calculating <br />supply and demand in years of low, normal and high flows, as well as average water <br />supply and demand in all years, <br /> <br />For purposes of the hydrological analyses of this study, years were classified as <br />years of low streamflow if the annual flow was less than the mean annual flow by <br /> <br />III-I <br />
