GENERAL 1 NFORMA TI ON

A. Location and Regional Setting

The Santa Maria Dam and Reservoir is an off-channel storage reser-
voir located in the San Juan Mountains in Mineral County, Colorado.
More particularly, the dam and reservoir are located within Sections
16, 21, 22, 27 and 28, T41N, R2W of the New Mexico P.M. as shown on
Figure 1-1. This reservoir location, approximately 9 miles west-
southwest of the town of Creede, Colorado, is at an elevation of about
9,400 feet.

Since the reservoir is off-channel, the drainage basin is only
4.25 square miles. The reservoir is filled primarily by diversions
out of North Clear Creek. Diversion flows are conveyed through a
seven foot diameter siphon/pipeline 1.5 miles long which discharges
into a 1.5 mile long open canal prior to entering the reservoir. The
maximum flow capacity of the diversion system is estimated to be 500
cfs. The use of water stored in the reservoir is to provide irriga-
tion water, including groundwater recharge, to agricultural users in
the San Luis Valley.

B. History of the Dam

The dam was originally constructed between 1910 and 1913 at the

site of Santa Maria Lake, which was an existing natural lake.

1 - _
