During the period of April through August, the precipitotion is relatively high.
During June through August, temperatures normolly reach 900 Fond temperatures higher
than 1000 F are not uncommon.

The onnual precipitation in the project area averages 12 to 14 inches per year. At
Las Animas, for example, the precipitation averages about 12.9 inches per year, of which
about 70 percent occurs during the months of April through August.

The average monthly temperatures and precipitation at Las Animas are given in the
following table (period of record 1941-1970):

Avg. Its characteristics include being deep, well
drained, and nearly level to gently sloping. It is located just north of the flood plain
along the Arkansas River on the terraces and lower lying parts of the uplands. It is fairly
uniform in topogrophy, soil types, and land uses. The Rocky Ford soils are deep clay
looms and have a loam subsoil. The Numa soils are similar to the Rocky Ford soils but
have clay subsoil. Nearly all the acreage is irrigated.

The other major soil association in the project area is the Manvel-Minnequa-
Penrose Association. This association is found at intermediate elevations between the
flood plain and the uplands. It is characterized of slopes of less than 10 percent with
some outcrops of limestone and limey shale. Nearly all the acreage is native grass and
used for pasture.

Of the 300,000 acres within the project area, about 93,000 acres are presently
irrigoted with water from the Fort Lyon Canal. This acreage is shown on Figure 3, with
the principal crops being wheat, corn, grain sorghum, and alfalfa.

2
