Repairing the deteriorated concrete; <br />2. Reconditioning the bay on the upstream end; <br />3. Installing additional bars on the trashrack; <br />4. Realigning the wasteway channel; <br />5. Installing a 10-foot Parshall flume and flow recorder at Wasteway No.2. <br />The estimated cost for this work is $41,300 as outlined in Table B-3. <br /> <br />4O-foot Parshall Flume, Fort Lyon Canal. The 40-foot Parshall flume is located <br />approximately one mile downstream from the lower diversion dam, and is the official <br />point of measurement for the Fort Lyon Canal and the Kicking Bird Canal. The flume is <br />o concrete structure with a timber floor covering and is equipped with a continuous flow <br />recorder os well as a staff gage (see Photograph 5). <br /> <br />The structure is in good condition with the exception of considerable wear of the <br />timber floor. The original construction drawings of the flume show a concrete floor and <br />we have assumed that the timber overlay was added after original construction. <br /> <br />There have been some concerns expressed by some employees of the canal company <br />regarding the condition of the timber floor and the possible need for repair. However, <br />our investigations indicate that the present operation af the flume is satisfactory, and <br />that repairs to the structure ore not necessary at this time. <br /> <br />Steel Flume over Horse Creek, Fort Lyon Canal. The Horse Creek flume is located <br />about 15.5 miles downstream from the lower diversion dam and is used to carry the Fort <br />Lyon Canol water over Horse Creek. The flume consists of a I 23-inch diameter, 400- <br />foot-long steel conduit supported on four steel bents, with concrete inlet and outlet <br />structures, a concrete and masonry approach approximately 290 feet long, and a six-bay <br />concrete regulator at the upstream end of the approach. There is also a five-bay <br />concrete wasteway structure adjacent to the regulator. (See Figure 8 and Photographs 6, <br />7, and 8). Flow through the regulator is controlled by six adjustable steel check gates, <br />and releases from the wasteway are controlled by five timber slide gates. Overflow <br />gates are located at both the inlet and outlet of the flume to release excess canal flows <br />into Horse Creek. <br /> <br />The structure is presently operable, but the flume has a history of excessive wear <br />and leakage, particularly along the invert. This is the result of high sediment <br />concentrations in the canal water combined with high flow velocities through the flume. <br />Under normal operating conditions, the velocity of the flow through the flume is <br />estimated to be over 20 feet per second.
