<br />I <br />I <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Sys tem Capaci ty <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Knowledge of the approximate capacities of the various elements <br />of the water system is a valuable guide to planning future system <br />improvements. Although only approximate estimates are possible, they <br />none the less show the order in which elements of the system will <br />require attention as the demand increases. An updated version of a <br />table which appeared in the 1959 Morrill Report reciting the <br />capacities of the water supply and transmission system is shown in <br />Table 1II-5. <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />The revised capacities take into account changes in the <br />collection system such as rehabilitation of the original Delta <br />Pipeline, the proposed Oak Creek Diversion, dual lines at the <br />Gunnison River crossing, and other improvements made since 1959. <br />All pipeline capacities were computed by using the Hazen-Williams <br />formula with C = 100 to account for roughness in the old pipe. <br />The calculation of the capacity of the original Delta Pipeline <br />was based on 6-inch pipe and the Manning formula with n = 0.015. <br />Slope determinations necessary for calculating the capacities were <br />based entirely on contour maps published by the U. S. Geological <br />Survey. These maps were not available in the 1959 investigation <br />and are more accurate for making reasonable estimates of transmission <br />pipeline capacity than the altimeter readings used in the previous <br />investigation. However, these estimates are believed to be on <br />the high side and actual capacities may even be less. In 1974, <br />for example, an experiment was made to determine how much water <br />could be crowded into the Doughspoon Aqueduct.
