I

I

Raw Water Control Reservoirs

I

I

The City of Delta owns or has interests in the several
reservoirs located on Grand Mesa as previously described. These
reservoirs are located from 10 to 15 miles away from the filter plant
at elevations from 9,000 to 10,000 feet. The extreme distances from
the treatment facilities and exposure to severe climatic conditions
makes it doubtful to classify these reservoirs as being strictly for
raw water storage purposes. If a break anywhere in the transmission
pipelines on Grand Mesa were to occur, such as from a landslide, then
water in some or all of these reservoirs and from other sources could
be completely cut off from reaching the chemical treatment works and
filtration plant. Except for the White Stabilization Reservoir, their
value is mainly as a source of supply or for exchange purposes in
acquiring more desirable sources.

I

I

I

I

In 1961, after recommendations by Engineer Laren D. Morrill in
1959, a raw water reservoir was constructed in the vicinity of the
old chlorinator house. This location is approximately 4 1/2 miles
north of the City of Delta. This reservoir is known as the Delta
Control Reservoir and has a capacity of 34.04 acre-feet. The purpose
of this reservoir is to regulate and control the supply of water
diverted from surface flows or released from the reservoirs located
at higher elevations on Grand Mesa. Construction of the Delta Control
Reservoir was also aimed at eliminating overflow and waste from the
treated water reservoirs located on Garnet Mesa east of the City of
Delta.

I I
I I

I

The Delta Control Reservoir is located ahead of the present
chemical treatment works. The outlet of the present transmission line
off Grand Mesa is located in the center of the reservoir basin. The
dam is 23 feet high and the maximum depth of water is 18 feet. The
particular details of the decree for this reservoir were shown in the
last entry of Table II-2.

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

III - 6

I
