SAN JUANIDOLORES/ANIMAS BASIN

Basinwide Conditions Assessment:
The SWSI value of 3.5 indicates that for July basin
water supplies were well above normal. Storage in McPhee,
Vallecito, and Lemon reservoirs totaled 128% of normal as of
the end of July. Flow at the gaging station Animas River near
Durango averaged 3,036 ds as compared to the 1961-1993
July average of 1,149 ds.
Due to a delay in this year's runoff, the average flows
for July in all of the major streams basins were well above
normal. The Dolotes River was at 254% of average for July,
and the La Plata River was at 264% of average. The Animas
River peaked at 4,730 ds on July 10.
The sustained runoff allowed most of the reservoirs to
fill, with releases not being necessary to satisfy demands until
late in the month. Most of the irrigation ditches were able to
maintain a full supply throughout July even though the
average precipitation was below normal.
Weather in the basin was cool during the first week
of July, and was warm and dry later in the month.
Precipitation was only 36% of average with 0.64 inches being
reported in Durango. Because of the warm temperatures and
low precipitation, soil moisture conditions in non-irrigated
areas were generally poor at month's end.

Public Use Imoacts
July was an excellent month for rafting enthusiasts to
enjoy above normal river flows and an extended season. Most
area fanners have received an adequate water supply and have
harvested some excellent hay crops. The runoff season has
been near perfect for all water users and recreation lovers.
