Precipitation Data
Staff reviewed local precipitation data sets from 2 different sites located around the Dorsey
Creek Drainage (see Precipitation Data in Appendix C), These sites include Saguache and
Center. Table 3 shows the water year and the percent of average precipitation recorded at each
site,
Table 3; Precipitation Data as a percental!e of Averal!e,
Elevation = 7770 Elevation = 7670
Lat 38 05 00 Lat 37 45 00
Long 106 09 Long 106 07
Year Saauache Center
1979 86% 88%
1980 89% 93%
1981 106% 100%
1982 No Data 89%
1983 82% 103%
1984 87% 78%
1985 91% 127%
Averaae 108% 113%
Table 3 shows a slight variation of precipitation between the two relatively close precipitation
sites. It is staffs opinion that the 6 years of stream-flow data analyzed is representative of
slightly above average water-years,
Existing Water Right Information
Staff has analyzed the water rights tabulation and consulted with the Division Engineer Office to
identify any potential water availability problems. There are no decreed surface diversions within
this reach of stream, However, the United States Forest Service does have a streamflow
quantification point (QP53D5) upstream on Dorsey Creek for 4.0 cfs, Based on this analysis
staff has determined that water is available for appropriation on Dorsey Creek, between the
RGNF Boundary and the BLM Boundary, to preserve the natural environment to a reasonable
degree without limiting or foreclosing the exercise of valid existing water rights,
CWCB Staffs Instream Flow Recommendation
Staff recommends the Board form its intent to appropriate on the following stream reach:
SeQment: National Forest Boundary to San Luis Creek
Upper Terminus: National Forest Boundary at
(Latitude 380 25' 15") (Longitude 106002' 08")
Lower Terminus: San Luis Creek
(Latitude 380 25' 08") (Longitude 106003' 20")
Counties: Saguache
Length: 1,2 miles
USGS Quad(s): Poncha Pass
Flow Recommendation: 0,80 cfs (May 1 st - May 31 st)
0,35 cfs (June 1 st - July 14th)
0,25 cfs (July 15th - October 31 st)
0.35 cfs (November 1 st - April 30th)
Dorsey_Creek _ISF _ RPT _v 1 .doc
- 5 -
