-

.

e

~
,

DORSEY CREEK

1997

Dorsey Creek is a small, first order stream tributary to San Luis Creek in
northern San Luis Valley. The small watershed drains the southwest aspect of
. Methodist Mountain. Land ownership includes, USFS, BLM and a small parcel of
private land near the confluence with San Luis Creek. The stream is characterized
by steep gradient toward the headwater, cobble and boulder substrate, moderate
siltation, and localized livestock grazing damage. Moderate beaver activity was
observed at the lower terminus of Dorsey Creek.

The purpose of the survey was to collect information for a minimum stream
flow report. Although there is no record of fish stocking, the stream is inhabited by a
fair population of brook trout. The sample was dominated with yearling brook trout,
suggesting that adult habitat may be limiting at certain times of the year. The
estimated population size is 3,000 fish. Native fish were not collected, and without a
natural barrier this stream is not considered a native fish restoration site.

Management Recommendations:

1) Stocking: No stocking required at this time.

2) Regulations: Maintain standard methods, bag and possession limit for
trout.

3) Habitat improvement: Minimize livestock grazing in the riparian zone.

4) Access/FaciIities: None recommended at this time.

5) InformationlEducation: None recommended at this time.

i, USOl ~~M. __.
