The winter flow
recommendations which met 2 of 3 criteria and are within the accuracy range of the R2CROSS
model range from 3.3 cfs to 1.0 cfs (See Table 1). Averaging the two summer flow
recommendations within range results in a 4.6 cfs recommendation. Averaging the two winter
flow recommendations within range results in a 2.2 cfs recommendation.

The Blue Creek stream segments have been identified by the BLM as losing stream reaches,
because these stream reaches are losing reaches the BLM recommended a higher instream flow
amount for the upper segment (5.5 and 3.3 cfs) than for the lower segment (3.5 and 1.0 cfs). In
addition, the upper segment contains trout year-round and the lower segment does not.

Hydrologic Data

After receiving the cooperating agency's biologic recommendation, the CWCB staff conducted
an evaluation of the stream hydrology to determine if water was physically available for an
instream flow appropriation. The closest gage CWCB staff found was the gage located on Roc
Creek 8.4 miles southwest of the Blue Creek drainage. The hydro graph below was derived from
data collected by the USGS stream gage for Roc Creek near Uranium, CO (ill #09179000),
which has a drainage area of 75.8 square miles. The drainage area upstream of Calamity Creek
is approximately 30 square miles and the drainage area upstream of the Dolores River is
approximately 81 square miles. Staff used a basin apportionment method to estimate stream
flows above and below Calamity Creek for Blue Creek (See Gage Summary in Appendix C).
The period of record for this gage was 1944 to 1952, the period of record used by staff in their
analysis was 1944 - 1952, or eight years of record. Table 2 below displays the estimated flow of
Blue Creek upstream of Calamity Creek, in terms of a percentage of exceedence.

Table 2:

Estimated flow of Blue Creek upstream of Calamity Creek
Exceedences J F h
1%
5%
10%
20%
50%
80%
90%
95%
99%

anuarv ebruarv Marc Aoril Mav June Julv August September October November December
2.89 4.65 8.12 87.23 74.05 44.64 6.91 6.21 1.80 3.32 2.85 3.27
2.77 3,22 4.75 66.09 42.19 29.29 &.02 3.01 1.39 2.77 253 2.45
2.77 2.77 3.96 50.26 34.27 19.39 4.04 1.51 0.91 2.15 2.37 2.06
2.14 2.10 3.75 23.35 25.49 9.50 1.86 0.87 0.67 1.35 2.14 1.78
1.58 1.98 2.57 6.73 10.29 2.85 0.59 0.59 0.51 0.67 1.11 1.31
1.01 1.27 1.58 4.35 3.05 0.95 0.28 0.24 0.32 0.51 0.47 0.28
0.32 1.03 1.35 2.73 1.67 0.51 0.20 0.16 0.20 0.40 0.28 0.04
0.32 0.95 0.90 1.90 US 0.24 0.16 0.12 0.20 0.36 0.16 0.00
0.32 0.91 0.71 1.19 0.87 0.20 0.12 0.08 0.12 0.32 0.06 0.00

- 6 -
