<br />Floods caused by overflow of the Eagle River through Minturn were <br />studied in detail~ Due to a lack of significant development approxi- <br />mate methods were used to evaluate the flood hazards of Grouse CrGek~ <br />Martin and Game Creeks were not studied because these areas dYe <br />undeveloped and have no immediate plans for development. <br /> <br />Those areas studied by detailed methods were chosen with consider- <br />ation given to all proposed construction and forecasted development <br />through 1984. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />The Town of Minturn is located in eastern Eagle County, in central <br />Colorado. The town is completely surrounded by unincorporated <br />areas of Eagle County~ <br /> <br />The town is a small mountain community situated approximately 5 miles <br />southwest of Vail, Colorado~ The present population is 1500, <br />dccording to estimates from the Office of the Town Clerk~ Minturn <br />is vrincipally a residential community for persons who work the <br />mines in the surrounding area. <br /> <br />The Eagle River flows northwesterly through Minturn on its way to its <br />confluence with the Colorado River at Dotsero. The Eagle River at <br />Minturn has a drainage area of approximately 265 square miles, all <br />within Eagle County~ The eastern and southern boundary of the <br />drainage area is the Continental Divide~ Vegetation along the channel <br />through Minturn is generally willow bushes and native grasses. The <br />channel bed is mostly cobble material with interspersed boulders~ <br /> <br />The major soil types in the Eagle River basin are of the Haploborolls- <br />Argiborolls-Eutroboralfs Association~ These cool, well-drained <br />soils, which range from deep to shallow and moderate to steep, occur <br />on benches and mountain slopes (Reference 1) ~ <br /> <br />Development in Minturn consists of single-family residences and a few <br />private businesses. The majority of this development is adjacent to <br />U.S. Highway 24. <br /> <br />The Eagle River is in a fairly well-defined channel through town, <br />and only a very small percentage of structures in the community are <br />affected Ly the flood magnitudes investigated for this study. <br /> <br />3 <br />
