A section of unincorporated
county land is located in the upper reach of the Floodway.

REGIONAL FLASH FLOOD HISTORY

Introduction

Historical accounts of the Pikes Peak region make reference
to many flash flood events since 1864. Not surprisingly, a
majority of the events involve flooding on Fountain and Monument
Creeks. Accounts of related flooding on smaller streams are for
the most part sketchy; however, major flooding on larger creeks
usually indicates associated smaller creek flooding as well.
Similarly, many of the government documents that contain flood
history accounts state that specific information concerning
intensity, duration, magnitude of stream flooding and flood
effects are generally lacking. See Table 1 for local flood
characteristics and records.

Documented historical floods generally conform to the May
though August thunderstorm/flash flood season. The typical
thunderstorm/flash flood pattern is described as follows: during
the mid to late afternoon, a large convective storm cell centers
over an upslope drainage basin and drops heavy precipitation.
Stream banks overflow and send torrential floodwaters cascading
down ravines and gullies and sheeting over flatlands. Frequently
floodwaters leave a trail of extensive property damage and loss
of human life.

Since 1864 many flood events have been documented in various
periodicals; historical publications and government documents.
. Some of the region's most notable floods and those most
frequently described in government documents include the floods
of June 10, 1864, July 25, 1885, May 30-31, 1935, May 11, 1947,
and June 17, 1965. The following section is a history of some of
the region's major and interesting flood events.

Flash Flood Historv

Julv 28. 1985. Flooding occurred in Fountain, Colorado, after
the town received five inches of rain in three hours. Jimmy camp
Creek rose six to seven feet. Severe street flooding occurred
due to waist high water. One building collapsed, and sixty
people were evacuated. Heavy rains also fell in Colorado
Springs, causing damage to streets and roads (Novak, 1986).

12
