.

.

.

PRESS RELEASE
March 10, 1998

High Water Mark Signs

High Water Mark Signs have been placed at several locations along the Spring
Creek BikeiTrai] to document the water Ieve] of the Ju]y 28, ]997 flood. An important
aspect of flood warning and education is to promote awareness of potentia] flooding.
Obviously, the Ju]y 28, ]997 flood was a significant event for the community. The City of
Fort Collins Stormwater Division of the Water Utilities felt the magnitude of the event
should be permanently documented.
To meet this objective, the Stormwater Division constructed signs that have been
erected in visible locations along Spring Creek. The signs are constructed of a steel post
set in the ground with a placard that reads "HIGH WATER - JULY 28, ] 997" with an
arrow pointing up to a blue water wave on top of the post. This water wave is set at the
elevation of the documented high water mark at that location. These signs will help to
remind citiiens that floods do occur in Fort Collins, as well as helping new residents to
the City learn how high the flood waters have been in the past. Learning from the past is
the key to planning for the future.
The 'following sites were selected because of the high visiblity to the users of the
City's parks1and trails:

· North side of the Drake Rd. Bridge
· Rolland Moore Park across from the playground
· Bike trail bridge south of Wallen burg Dr.
· Creekside Park (Dairy Queen)
· South side of the Stuart St. Bridge
,
· Edora Park north of the playground
.' East side of the Riverside Ave. Bridge (EPIC)

,~

Please feel free to contact either Rodney A]bers (224-6024) or Marsha Hilmes (224-6036)
in the Stormwater Division with questions or comments.

I
