Radio and television slations, <br />newspapers, and police and fire department personnel provide <br />warnings about possible flooding in low. lying areas. It is imperative <br />that you know the level of your property in relation to the river flood <br />stages if you live in an area subject to flooding. Thus, when flood <br />predictions are for a certain flood stag8, you will know whether your <br />property is above or below that leveL If you live below the flood <br />level, you will have an idea how high the water will be in your home <br />and what actions you will have to take to lessen damage to your <br />property . <br /> <br />, <br />. <br /> <br />In the event of a flash flood warning, immediate action is necessary <br />to save yourself and your family. Know in advance the route you will <br />take to avoid the flood waters, for they are unpredictable and <br />deadiy. Flash floods are ranked in terms of whether they will be <br />minor, moderate or severe. <br /> <br />If you have to evacuate your home, there are certain essential items <br />you should take with you that can be used during and aflerthe <br />flood. Pack these in your car to be ready to go when you do. <br /> <br />Packing List of Essential Items Needed During and Aller a <br />Flood (Prepare in Advance) <br /> <br />If you have received a flood warning, stock your car with emergency <br />suppiies to be evacuated with you. These might include: <br />. Special medications or dietary foods <br />. Eyeglasses <br />. Hearing aid batteries <br />. First.aid supplies <br />. Baby formulas and supplies <br />. Supply of non-perishable food <br />. Pet food <br />. Water purification tablets or 5.25% sodium hypochlorite liquid <br />laundry bleach for purifying drinking water <br />. Sanitary and toilet supplies <br />. Flashlight, batteries, and bulbs <br />. Battery operated portable radio <br />. Tools - shovel, hammer, pliers, screw driver, axe <br />. Blankets <br />. Dry clothing (especially shoes and socks) <br />. Rubber boots, gloves, and hard hat <br />. Important papers <br />. Bank books and check book <br />. Valuables and cherished articles (jewelry), pictures <br />. Games for group play for children and adults <br /> <br />Warnings for floods, not flash floods, usually give the height of the <br />crest and the approximate time of its arrival, but flooding might start <br />some time before the crest is reached.
