I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

INTERPRETATION AND USE OF REPORI' DATA

The objective of this report is to provide floodplain management
information and mapping for the Town of Parachute, the Colorado Water
Conservation Board and the Federal EIrergency Managenent Agency to use in their
respective land use planning and flood insurance program administration. The
flood elevations contained herein can be used by individuals to determine the
extent of potential flooding on certain parcels within the study area.

Data for the 10-, 50-, 100- and 500-year floods are contained herein. This
data is in conformance with the requirements of the Colorado Water Conservation
Board and the Federal EIrergency Managenent Agency.

The 100-year flood event is used to define floodplain limits which in turn
affect land uses permitted in certain areas. The State of Colorado has
designated the 100-year event as the design flood for protecting structures and
dwellings, and for establishing flo~ay requirements in major drainage
channels. However, floods larger than the 100-year can and do occur.

The 500-year flood data is included to illustrate potential hazards of a
very large flood event occurin::r in the community. Design of high risk
facilities such as those associated with the manufacture and storage of toxic
substances or explosives, or important public facilities such as power plants,
water or wastewater treatment plants, hospitals, nursing hones or schools should
consider the 500-year flood data contained herein.

The lesser 10- and 50-year events are included to provide information
relative to the design of lower risk facilities such as street crossings, park
improvenents, channel improvements, agricultural lands and similar floodplain
developnents. Typically, lower risk facilities are those where there is not a
substantial risk to life in the event of a flood.

Revised floodplain data is contained in Table 4 for Parachute Creek.
Floodplain data for the Colorado River is listed in Table 5. Flood elevations
are illustrated in prOfile in Figures 9 through 13, contained in the back of the

16
