2.0 INTRODUCTION

2. 1 ~ocation of the Site

The Union Carbide Corporation Uravan Mill complex is located on
the San Miguel River, the main tributary of the Dolores River'
located in southwest Colorado and discharging into the Colorado
River in southeast Utah. (Figure 1.) The town of Uravan is
located in Montrose County, Colorado, approximately 50 miles
south of Grand Junction.

2.2 Methodology: Surface Hydrology and Floodway Analysis

Peak river flows for floods of various recurrence intervals were
determined by a 1 iterature sear'ch and verified for reasonable..
ness. A review of past UCC reports was conducted to determine
previously stated flood flo\'ls and the techniques employed to
calculate maximum surface water elevations.

Using a topographiC map provided by UCC, (1" = 200' sca'le, 2 foot
contour interval), cross sections were prepared of the study area
and the various peak floodflows routed through the river valley.
The hydraul ic analyses were conducted using the Corps of Engineers
HEC-2 computer model. The following sections of this report
describe in detail the assumptions, techniques, results, and con-
clusions of the various flood profile calculations.

2
