FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY
TOWN OF ERIE, COLORADO

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose of Study

This Flood Insurance Study revises and updates a previous Flood
Insurance Study/Flood Insurance Rate Map for the Town of Erie,
Colorado. This information will be used by the Town of Erie to
update existing floodplain regulations as part of the Regular Phase
of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The information
will also be used by local and regional planners to further promote
sound land use and floodplain development.

In some states or communi ties, floodplain management cri teria or
regulations may exist that are more restrictive or comprehensive
than the minimum Federal requirements. In such cases, the more
restrictive criteria take precedence and the State (or other
juriSdictional agency) will be able to explain them.

1.2 Authority and Acknowledgments

The hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for the area north of Perry
Street, dated April 1978, were performed by Gingery Associates,
Inc., for the Federal Insurance Administration, under Contract No.
H-40l7. Subsequent refinements of this hydrologic and hydraulic
data were developed by Water Resources Consultants, Inc., in August
1980, and Michael Baker, Jr., Inc., in March 1981. These revisions
have been incorporated into this study.

The hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for the reach of Coal Creek
south of the Union Pacific Railroad were performed by U.S.
Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, for the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), under Contract No.
EMW-87-E-255l. This study was completed in August 1988.

The sources of authority
National Flood Insurance
Protection Act of 1973.

for this Flood Insurance Study are the
Act of 1968 and the Flood Disaster

1.3 Coordination

Initial meetings to identify streams requiring detailed study
within the Town of Erie were held on March 31 and April 16, 1976.
These meetings were attended by representatives of the Colorado
Water Conservation Board (CWCB), FEMA, the Weld County Planning
Department, and Gingery Associates, Inc. (GAl). Another meeting
was held on January 28, 1977, attended by representatives of FEMA,
the Mayor and Town Clerk of Erie, and GAL The purpose of this
meeting was to gather flooding information and outline the study
procedures for the reach of Coal Creek north of the Union Pacific
