Location Las Animas, Colorado, is located on the right bank of the Arkansas River at river mile 1,176.8 about 18 miles upstream from John Martin Dam. A levee about 10 miles long would provide flood protection along the right bank; while a levee about one mile long would provide protection for the left bank. The floodway formed by the levees would vary in width from 1,600 to 2,900 feet. .
