DESCRIPTION OF CHERRY CREEl: (CONT'D)

city.

The storm of l:lemol'ial DaJr, 1935, when unusually heavy rains

of exceptional duration resulted in destr~ctive floods in many watersheds

of Eastern Colorado, involved only the upper portion of the Cherry Creek

watershed, oreating a flood in that portion which, by the time it reached

Denver, had diminished so that it was carried through without IIlIl.terial

damage. This storm center, transposed in location and shifted as to

its axis and direction, to fit the watershed of Cherry Creek (thus re-

presenting maximum conations), has been utilized to design supplemental

flood control works on Cherry Creek, as hereinafter mentioned.

PROTECTION P!WGRAM OF CITY OF DENVER

Pri0r to 1907 such expenditures as were made in Denver,

as protection against Cherry Creek floods, were made by individuals for

improvements such as pile and lumber bank proteotion at various points
where erosion was serious.
During the period 1907 to 19:14, a ohannel improvement
program was undertaken (jointly between the city and owners of adjoining
property), whioh resulted in a straightened, widened, and concrete-walled
ohannel (mininnun eo ft. wide by 10 ft. deep), with a safe carrying capacity
of 10,000 sec. ft., through residential and business sections of the City.
These improvements are reported to have cost ()eeo,ooo.
Atter the disastrous flood of Aug. 3, 1933, an additional
flood control program was devised. One unit in this program was the
Sullivan Barrier, or Kenwood Dam (as it is frequently termed), which was

was construoted in 1935 at a cost of ~800,ooO.

-4-
