U. S. BljREAU OF RECLA!iATION REPORT (cmIT'D)
FLOOD CONTROL (C01IT'D)

The probability of such a flood's occurrence, and the

frequencies with which the assumed and lesser floods mi&ht be expected

at Castlewood D!l.IIl are given, in the Report, as follows I

Flood Expectancy Flood Volt.llllB Peak Flow
Once In .are-Feet Sec.Ft.
l. 400 1,000
5 1,600 6,000
10 2,500 10,000
25 4,000 17,000
50 5,800 25,000
100 8.000 ;56.000
250 12,000 55,000
500 16.000 75,000
1000 21,500 100.000
Maximum 28,500 132,000

The Bureau's conclusion is that the Castlewood D~ if

constructed, "would fully control floods originating above and definitely

remove the inadequacy of Kenwood Dam (i.e. S1l11ivan Barrier) to control

maximum floods that originate in whole, or to a large degree, above the

site." Without reconstruction of Castlewood D!l.IIl, floods originating

above the site, as modified by the Sullivan BarrierJ would create the
following flood crests in Denver.

-18-
