;IIS'~ORY OF ORIGINAL CASTLECOOD DAM (CONTtD.)

2.640 acre-feet in stcrage) and over-topping the dam about 18 inches.

V/hen a few laid masonry rocks in the downstream face of the spillway

section were loosened and displaced. the entire center and right abutment

sections crumbled quickly. releasing the entire over-filled reservoir of

water. The resulting flood crest, estimated at 126,000 sec. ft.. immedia-

tely bolo\'! the dam, diminished to 34,000 sec. ft.. at the site of the

now existing Sullivan Barrier, and further diminished to 16.000 sec. ft.

in Denver, causing damages of approximately ()l,OOO.OOO in Cherry Creek

Valley and in Denver. Viithout question, had the Sullivan Barrier then

been functioning, all of the damages in Denver would have been avoided.

U. S.
