<br />The storm began on Saturday afternoon and started with large hailstones and wind that broke oul a <br />number of windows and damaged crops. Witnesses said that the storm continued inlo lhe evening <br />wilh intense rains following the initial hailstorm. The CWCS staff did not gather data for <br />estimating a peak streamflow due to the localized drainage problem and ditch overflow (non- <br />riverine flooding) in Crook. However, posl-flood photographs were taken (see appendix) and <br />rainfall estimales for lhe storm were obtained and are presented in lhe following table. <br /> <br />Rainstorm of July 25, 1998 <br />Crook, Colorado <br /> <br />Information Source Rainfall Amount Duration <br />Howard Hamilton 4.8" 3 hours or less (storm lotal) <br />(official NWS weather observer <br />for Crook) <br />Crook Postmaster 4.5" Max. I hour (not storm total) <br />Crook Homeowner 5.5" 3 hours or less (storm total) <br /> <br />The community of Fleming, localed in extreme eastern Logan County not far from Phillips County, <br />was conlacted to inquire about recent flooding problems. Fleming received a minor rainstorm on <br />July 20th with no reported flood damage or flood problems. The postal clerk mentioned that the St. <br />Peters area received several inches of rain on July 20th, with minor stream flooding reported, <br /> <br />Sedgwick County <br />The lown of Sedgwick, localed in northwestern Sedgwick County about 5 miles south of the <br />Colorado-Nebraska state line, experienced an inlense rainstorm on July 27. A very hard rain was <br />reported 10 have happened belween 5pm and 7:30pm, with much lighter rains continuing until about <br />9:30pm. Flooding in houses and businesses was minimal, but slreet flooding was a problem during <br />and after the storm. The poslal clerk said that the official weather observer (Trent Smith, located 2 <br />blocks north of the Posl Office) and one other weather observer recorded 4.5" to 5.5" of rain for the <br />slorm total. The CWCS staff did not gather data for eSlimating a peak streamflow due to lhe <br />localized drainage problem (non-riverine flooding) in Sedgwick. <br /> <br />Phillips County <br />CWCS staff visited a number of communities in Phillips County including Amherst, Holyoke, and <br />Haxtun. These communities were contacted following news reports of heavy rains and/or flooding <br />that happened between July 20th and July 25th. <br /> <br />Haxtun received about 4" of rainfall during the week of July 20th, however lhe worsl individual <br />rainstorm only dumped aboul 1.3" of rain on July 25th. There was no major flooding reported in <br />lown. CWCS staff did not perform a rainfall bucket survey and did not oblain discharge estimales <br />in Haxtun for this event. <br /> <br />The baseflow in Frenchman Creek rose fairly rapidly to a minor flood flow when the community of <br />Holyoke experienced a rainstorm on July 23rd, Fortunately, the "bullseye" of the rainstorm was <br />located to the north and east, which spared the city from receiving major flood damage like it did <br />during lhe June 1997 flood event. Maximum rainfall amounts in Holyoke were reported to be on <br />lhe order of2" in a 60 to 90 minule time period. The storm happened around 7pm. <br /> <br />2 <br />
