<br /> <br />Introduction: <br /> <br />Each year many acres of agricultural and open space <br />lands are converted to urban uses in Colorado. <br /> <br />Projections developed by the Colorado Land Use <br />Commission in 1973 indicate that urbanized acreage <br />will increase from 597,552 in 1973 to 714,648 by 1980; <br />and to 946,203 by 2000. <br /> <br />During the period of conversion, land is disturbed and <br />exposed to erosion by wind and water. <br /> <br />Soil displaced by erosion contributes to both on-site <br />and off-site damages and much of it ultimately reaches <br />the State's live streams in the form of sediment and <br />other pollutants. <br /> <br />The purpose of this guide is to explain the erosion and <br />sedimentation processes and provide guidance for the <br />planning and implementation of conservation systems <br />to reduce damage and pollution to acceptable levels. <br /> <br />iii <br />
