EXHIBIT 1. DETAILED SOILS DESCRIPTION OF THE FONDIS SERIES The Fondis series is a member of the fine, montmoril- lonitic, mesic family of Acidic Paleustolls. Typically they have friable granular noncalcareous A horizons that rest abruptly on fine textured silty noncalcareous upper B2t horizons having prismatic to blocky struc- ture. The lower B2t horizon consists of buried soil horizons that have developed in coarser textured par- ent materials. They grade to calcareous C horizons containing consistent subhorizons of visible secondary carbonate accumulation. Typifying Pedon: Fondis silt loam - grassland (Co]ors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) A] 0-7" -Grayish brown (lOYR 5/2) silt loam, very dark grayish brown (lOYR 3/2) moist; strong very fine granular structure; soft, very friable; some gray coatings on ped faces in the lower 1 inch of this horizon; noncal- careous, neutral pH 7.0 (BTB);, abrupt smooth boundary. (5 to 8 inches thick). B21t 7-]5""":" Brown (I0YR 5/3) silty clay, dark brown (I0YR 3/3) moist; strong medium and fine prismatic structure that parts to strong fine angular blocks; the horizon is slightly hard, very friable; peds are extremely hard; thin continuous wax-like coat- ings on ped faces; wax-like coatings and fillings in root channels and soil pores; noncalcareous, neutral pH 7.2 (BTB); clear smooth boundary. (7 to ]5 inches thick). B22t 15-23"- Brown (lOYR 5/3) silty clay, dark brown (I0YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium prismatic structure that parts to strong medium angular and subangular blocks; horizon is slightly hard, very friable; peds are ex- tremely hard; thin nearly continuous wax-like coatings on ped faces; wax- like coatings and fillings in robt chan- nels; calcareous, moderately alkaline pH 8.0 (CR); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick). IIB23tcab 23-36" -Pale brown (lOYR 613) heavy clay loam, dark brown (lOYR 4/3) moist; moderate medium prismatic struc- ture that parts to moderate medium subangular blocks; horizon is slightly hard, friable; peds are extremely hard; many thin wax-like patches on ped faces; wax-like coatings on the inside of root channels; moderate amounts of mica; some visible sec- ondary carbonate accumulation as nodules and seams between struc- tural aggregates; ped interiors are noncalcareous, the mixed soil mass is calcareous, moderately alkaline pH 8.2 (CR); gradual smooth boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick). IIB3cab 36-50" -Pale brown (lOYR 6-3) clay loam dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/4) moist; weak coarse prismatic struc- ture that parts to moderate medium subangular blocks; horizon is hard, friable; peds are very hard; thin wax- like patches on ped faces; thin wax- like coatings on the inside of root channels; moderate amounts of mica; 5 percent fine and very fine angular granite gravel; visible secondary car- bonate as concretions and in thin seams and streaks on ped faces and throughout the soil mass; calcareous, moderately alkaline pH 8.2 (CR); gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 15 inches thick). II Ccab 50-70" -Light yellowish brown (lOYR 614) light clay loam, dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/4) moist; massive; very hard, friable; moderate amounts of mica; 5 to 10 percent fine and very fine angular granite gravel; visible secondary carbonate as concretions and in thin seams and streaks; cal- careous, moderately alkaline pH 8.2 (CR). 19
