Lesson 5

Culvert Failures - Participant Workbook

CASE STUDY III

This study shows failures (or perhaps potential failures) that became evident in the
inspections following the flood. Some may have occurred during the flood while others
have been slowly becoming a problem over a longer time period. The culverts shown
are corrugated metal pipes, concrete pipes and concrete boxes. Each failure is rather
unique but seems to be related. Remember that the chief engineer will be meeting with
the govemor shortly.

Within the next twenty minutes, review the attached photographs, background material,
and

1. Establish the cause(s) of the failure.

2. Develop a way to prevent such failures in the future.

3. Select a spokesperson to summarize your findings to the "Chief Engineer."

5-12

,
,
I
il
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
t
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
