Lesson 5

Culvert Failures - Participant Workbook

Assume that the State has experienced a number of culvert failures in a recent
flood. The governor has requested the chief engineer of the Department of
Transportation to meet with him within the hour to discuss these failures. The
chief engineer has quickly establish a number of task forces to help him
determine the cause of the failures and to help provide recommendations to
prevent future problems. He has given each group a separate failure to analyze
and on which to develop a short summary of the cause and possible ways of
preventing such failures in the future. The summaries must be completed within
twenty minutes in order to meet the governor's time schedule.

Similar failures may be grouped together. The culvert sites include inlet failures,
culvert washouts, pipe failures, debris problems, and some material failures that
mayor may not be attributed to the recent flood. Photographs and a brief
background are given for each failure.

Each group is to: (1) establish the cause of failure; (2) suggest a way to prevent
such failures in the future; and (3) select a spokesperson to give a short
summary of the findings.

5-4

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
