Floods on Fountain Creek usually originate in storms

centered in the vicinity of Colorado Springs or downstream. Floods

that originate upstream of Colorado Springs generally dissipate to

negligible proportions prior to reaching Pueblo.

Plate 2 shows the crest stages and years of occurrence

of the highest ten recorded flows since 1921, including four which

axceeded the bankful stage of 9.4 feet at the 8th Street Bridge'

gaging station.

Duration and Rate of Rise

Duration of flooding data is not available for the

June 1965 flood on Fountain Creek, since all recording gages

were washed away. Streams draining mountainous and foothill

plains areas are characterized by fast rises after intense rainfall.

Veloci ties

The velocities in the channel of Fountain Creek in

the study reach are estimated to have ranged up to 22 feet per see-

ond (15 miles per hour), and overbank velocities are estimated to

have ranged up to 5 feet per second (4 miles per hour) during the

June 1955 flood.

Flooded Areas, Flood Profiles. and Cross Sections

Plates 4 through 9 show the approximate areas along

Fountain Creek that were inundated by the June 1965 flood, and those

which would be inundated by the Standard Project Flood and Interme-

diate Regional Flood. The actual limits of these overflow areaS on

the ground may vary slightly from those shown on the map because

the 10-foot contour interval and scale of the map do not permit

precise plotting of the flooded area boundaries. Accurate estimates

of water surface elevations, may be obtained from the high water pro-

file plates.

23
