~, /

Pueblo Ordinance Depot, and expansion of supporting mercantile

end service industries.

The major employers of labor in Pueblo are the Colorado

Fuel and Iron Corporation, Pueblo Ordinence Depot, and the Colorado

state Hospital. Manufacturing extends to the following: food and

kindred products; lumber and wood items; furniture and fixtures;

printing and publishing; chemical products; stone, clay, and glass

products; primary metal industries and fabricated metal products

including machinery; and other types.

The U.5. Bureau of the Census reported a population

of 91,181 in urban Pueblo and 118,707 in Pueblo County in the year

1960. Estimated 1968 populations according to the Colorado Budget

Department were 104,200 and 119,000, respectively, in the city and

county.

Flood Damaqe Prevention Measures

Following the flood of June 1965, local interests

improved the stream channel and levees from the 8th Street Bridge

,to below the 4th Street Bridge to contain a flow approximating the

June 1965 flood of 47,000 cubic feet per second. In August 1963

and January 1967, the Board of Pueblo County Commissioners adopted

a zoning resolution which established sta~dard5 to govern devel-

opment in specified special flood plain districts (5-3) along

Fountain Creek, Dry Creek, and the Arkansas River. In February 1968,

the Pueblo City Council passed a similar zoning ordinance to serve

the needs of the city. Figure 1 shows the location of the specified

flood plain districts (5-3) within the city of Pueblo, as they

appear on the city's Zoning District Map, dated March 8, 1968.

Pertinent sections of the respective county and city zoning reg-

ulations follow:

6

r"j-
