The Soil Conservation Service office ha~; soil survey data for
Larimer County. Huch of these data are mapped with .soil symbols.
Ho.....'ever, these symbols can be converted into the proper soil series
names by using the data on file at the SCS office. Once the soil
series is known, the soil can be cJ.assified :_nto r:he proper hydrologic
soil group, using Table 4,'f.1. 3-1.

To estimate curve number, use Tables 4.1,.1.3,-2 and 4.4.1.3-3, which
show the hydrologic soil group, by land use or cover type, and the runoff
curve number for each soil'-cover complex.

Table 4.4.1. 3-.1

Hydrologic Classification and Soi ~
Series Names for Colorado Soils
(From: U. S. Dept. of Agriculture,
Soil Conservation Service, 1977)

Hydrologic Soil Groups, according to th~ir infiltration and transmission
rates:

A--(Low runoff potential). Soils having high infiltration rates even
when thoroughly wetted; consist chiefly 0:[ deep, well to excessively
drained sands or gravel; have high rate of water transrni, ssion in
that water readily passes through them.
B--Soils having moderate infiltration rates '.hen thoroughly wetted;
consist chiefly of moderately fine to mod,erately coarse textures;
have moderate rate of water transmission.
C--Soils having slow infiltration rates when thoroughly wetted; con-
sist chiefly of soils with a layer that i:npedes downward movement
of water, or soils with moderately fine t'o fine texture; have slow
rate of water transmission.
D--(High runoff potential). Soils having very slow infiltration rates
when thoroughly wetted; consist chiefly of clay soils with a high
swelling potential; soils with .. permanent high water table; soils
with a claypan or clay layer at or near s'Jrface; shallow soils over
nearly impervious material; have very slo'. rate of ,,'ater transmission.

Soil Soil Soil
Soil Series Group Soil Series Gro~ Soil Series Group
-----
Aaberg D Acasco D Agneston B
Abor C Acree C Aguafria C
Absarokee C Adel B Alamosa C/B
Absher C Adena C Albinas B
Absted D Adilis B AIda ~ C
Acacia B Agner C AlIens Park B

LCS-WM !1anual

4.4---.2

AprH 1979
