STEP 9

HYDROLOGIC II~NALYSIS

Through the hydrologic analysis, a reasonable lDO-year fl.ow is determined,

. A local floodplain administrator lIleeds to be familiar with the
hydrologic regions of their area.
If there are distinct regions such as plains, mesas, foothills or mountains
in the community or nearby, that information needs to be c:onsidered.
Different regions have different runoff l~haracteristics.

. There may be applicable floodplain s~udies :that bavl~ been conducted
nearby.
It may not always be necessary to generate new hydrology, Check with
local, regional, state or federal agencies about other studies that may
provide guidance for the site in question,

. Often times, regional equations may be used to develop the hydrology
for an area with approximate mappiing information.
The U,S.G.S. has prepared regional regressions for different portions of the
state,. The reports containing the regressions may be helpfuL

. The Colorado Water Conservation Boar'd (CWCB) is currently
working with the U.s" Army COI']l'S of EJ1gine.~rs in developing a
Colorado Hydrology Manual.
The manual will discuss hydrologic regions in Colorado, methodologies for
those regions and the parameters for the various methodologies,

. Gage analysis may be III possible me~LIls of d,eveloping hydrology for a
specific drainage area if the data is suitable for the :malysis.
For some locations, a stream gage will be conveniently located, For other
locations, a nearby gage can provide a useful comparison to the basin of
interest.

NOTE: Remember, when developing hydrologk information, contact other
adjacent communities as well as agencies such as the Soil
Conservation Service, FEMA, the Urban Dra.inage and Flood
Control District (for the Denvel: Metro Area) and the CWCB.
