STEP 8

APPLICANT SURVEYS CROSS-SECTIONS

The applicant and floodplain administrator shall determine the required
number of crosssections using the following guide.

When the following conditions exist, the recomml~nded guide is:

. For a proposed single structure on a flat site, one cross-section can be
used"

. For a proposed single structure on :i steep site, at least two cross-
sections are needed.

. For two or more proposed structures, at lea:.t thr.~e cross-sections are
needed.

- One cross section through the improvement

- One cross-section upstream of the improvement

- One cross-section downstream of the improvement

. More cross-sections may be needed when there are several hydraulic
features or significant .:hanges in th.~ channel shape, valley
shape, stream gradient, and long stream reaches.

All cross-sections should be oriented perpendicular to flood flows
(not just low flows).

All cross-sections should be field surveyed and tied to a
recoverable assumed benchmark (e.g. curb, bridge abutment,
foundation, etc.)

For these types of stream rr:aches it is recommended that a BEe 2
analysis be performed as part of a floodplains study,
