The metro area <br />SllI]lassed the monthly rainiall avo <br />enge of 1.53 inches in the first <br />five days, when a 24.hour down- <br />pour dumped 2.04 inches of" rain <br />aaOss the city and suburbs. <br />If the heavy -rains keep up, the <br />metro area could beat a record set <br />in August 1979, when 5.~5 inches <br />lell. <br /> <br />And .t such a pace, a precipita- <br />tion total of 20 inches is a possibili- <br />ty this year, making it one 01 the <br />12 wettest yean in the metro area <br />since 1872. <br />Forecasters predict a repeat of <br />afternoon thundershowers today. <br /> <br />6 <br />
