However. the ditch seems to have served. e, useful purpose in <br /> <br /> <br />relieving the area West of Nllnn from the flood water there accumulat- <br /> <br /> <br />ing. Sinoe its oonstruction the ditch has become badly silted and its <br /> <br /> <br />capacity has been reduoed. <br /> <br /> <br />During May 1935, hee.vy re.ins occtlUed throughout Northeastern <br /> <br /> <br />Colorado. Abnormal flows oocurred in prac,tically all stream ohannels <br /> <br /> <br />at that time. The laramie-Polldre Canal W8.$ unable to oarry away the <br /> <br /> <br />flood waters aocumulating above t!'1e Town of Nunn. The water baoked up <br /> <br /> <br />behind the di toh to suoh an extent that the lower oa:nal banks were <br /> <br /> <br />broken by residents in order to a:Llow accumulated water to drain away. <br /> <br /> <br />These breaks were made at the Spr:l.ng Creek orossinl<:' and also at the <br /> <br /> <br />tributary draw whioh passes through the Town of Nunn" At other points <br /> <br /> <br />along the ditoh. the water appearfl to have obtained ,moh h@ight as to <br /> <br /> <br />break out at the lower bank o:~ the ditoh. The ohanne,l of :Lone Tree <br /> <br /> <br />Creek was out or washed through the larami'3-Poudre CSLnal. <br /> <br />10. HIGHlVAY AND RAILRO~'3SIN_GS, <br />As a result of the breaks in the lower bank of the laramie- <br /> <br /> <br />Poudre Canal at the Tovm of NtUUl and at the Spring Creek orossing. all <br /> <br /> <br />of the water from the 81 square miles of drainage above the oanal was <br /> <br /> <br />released to flow down to the j~own of Pierce. From the break at the <br /> <br /> <br />draw through the Town of Nunn. the water flowed toward Highway 85. being <br /> <br /> <br />interoepted by the road embanklllent just SOllth of the Town of Nunn. <br /> <br /> <br />Between this point and the Town of Pieroe there e,re three culverts or <br /> <br /> <br />bridges for drains aoross the highway and railroad. '!'he first of these <br /> <br /> <br />is one mile North of the Tovm of Pieroe, so that for I~ distanoe of 2-1/2 <br /> <br />-10- <br />
