Anchored Tire Revet~

Anchored tires can be used to control bank era. ion i~ .treams which do ~ot
have high flow velocities. High flow veiocities make it difficult to set
vegetation established. High velocities al.o increa.e the chance of era. ion
occurring around the tires. The .tream banks are shaped to a .lope no steeper
than 2 horizontal to 1 vertical, Tires are then tied togethar and placed on
the slope, They .hould extend up the bank to a height of one foot above the
high water elevation. The area above the tires should be shaped and seeded to
appropriate vegetation. The mat of tires is anchored to the slope to keep it
from floating when it is submerged. The toe of the tire mat .hould be pro-
tected wlth rock to prevent the stream from undercu, tting the tires. ~egeta-
tion .hould be established over the tire mat.

~aintenance requirements for this practice include replacement or repair oE
broken tire wires or anchors. Vegetation which ha$ been damaged due to ~ig~
flows .hould be ree.tablished.

50
