<br />THE WATERSHED HI 8R I EF <br /> <br />The portion of the Elk River Involved In this study IS <br />the lo~er portion just upstream from the confluence with the <br />Yampa River, in Routt County, Colorado [SEE ATTACHED MAPJ, <br />The drainage area of the Elk River (a part of the Colorado <br />River. Basin) is approximately 480 square mi I:es, Ele\lations <br />range from 6,515 feet at the confluence of the Vamp. and Elk <br />Rivers to 12,180 feet at the top of the ~atershed, <br /> <br />The annual precipitation in the study area is 18 to 25 <br />inches and the average frost-free period is 40 to 65 days, <br /> <br />GEOLOGY <br /> <br />Glacial deposits of Pleistocene age are ~idespread In <br />the Park Range and the White River Plateau, Moraine. <br />representing several intervals of glaciation are present <br />along most of the major valleys in the highe,r pOI-tions of <br />these areas, Several level$ of Pleistocene stream terraces <br />underlain by sandy and gravelly depo!3its occur alon9 the Elk <br />River. Recent alluvium occurs in floodplains of most <br />sm,aller tributaries as ~ell as along the lar.ger streams, <br />
