ControL \lith Jacks <br /> <br />Jacks can be used to stabiLLze most eroding banks, Jacks are especiaLly use- <br />fuL in streams which have wide sections due to stream bank Deandering, The <br />jacks can be located to aLLow eroded areas to siLt in behind the row of <br />jacks, On smaller .treams and streams with fairLy low flow veLocities, a <br />single row of jacks is all that would be required. The jacks can be fabrica- <br />ted from wood, conc.ute or metaL Individual jacks are fabricated by tying <br />three posts or beams in a cross shape with wire, The jacks are placed along <br />the toe of t~e bank. lock is placed on and around the base of wood jacks to <br />~eep t~em from floa.l:ing. The Jacks are anchored to the bank with cable and <br />deadman anchors, Vegetation shouLd be established in the area behind t~e <br />jacks, <br /> <br />~aintenance requirements for this practice lnclude inspecting the Jacks and <br />repairing any loose or broken wires, lny movemenc of the Jacks or rock should <br />be corrected by recurning it to its origineL local:ion. lny scour holes or <br />other erosion which has occurred behind the jacks should be reshaped and <br />revage ta tad, <br /> <br />38 <br />
