c

(FIRS~ DRAF'r - SUBJECT TO CHAl'KlE)

standards used for rating soils are made on the basis of factors such as soil
depth, slope, permeability", ~ percolation rate ,water table, soil drainage, and
overflow <oI'flooding' hazards. Factors relating to water'lllov, ement are for the
soil between depthS of 24 and 60 inches. Possibilities of underground water
pollution are very important.
;, ~.

Sewage lagoons. "The,Hmitation of soil is rated for use as water;"retention.
Ratings"are based upon undisturbed soil.

Dwellings without basements. Limitation ratings are based on the foUowing'
properties: soil drainage, seasonal high water table, flood hazard, slope,-
shrink-swell potential, Unified soil group, potential frost action, stoniness,
rockiness, and depth to bedrock.

SUITABILITY OF SOIL AS SOURCE OF selected material and features affecting use.

. RoadfiU. suitability of a soil as a source of roadfill is given for the
whole soil from the sur.face to a depth of 5 feet based on the assumption
that the" soil horizons will be mixed in loading, dumping, and spreading. If
the thickness of suitable material is less than about 3 feet because of
shallow depth to bedrock or other unsuited material, the whole soil is given
a rating of poor. Items considered in making the ratings are: engineering
soil classification, shrink-sweU potential, susceptibility to frost action,
slope, stoniness, rockiness,'and soil drainage class. The general ratings
are: good; fair, and poor.

Sand' and' gravel. Suitability of the soil as a source of and and/or gravel
for construction material for use in concrete, plaster, and mortar is given
for material to a depth of 5 feet. In some soi.ls the _sand and/or gravel
. extends downward to depths much below 5 feet, whereas in other areas of the
same soil, unsuitable material occurs just below 5 feet. It also should be
recognized that some. soils that are rated as unsuitable may have sand/or
gravel at a depth below 5 feet. Where the 'suitability is in question,
individual test pits will.be needed. The general ratings are: good, fair,
poor, and unsuited.

(4)

-- .,"'-'"
