East
of 1-25, a large]O\ residential community. Woodmoor. has been developed along with. a country
club and golf course,
Ponions of the Dirty Woman/Crystal Creek: Drainage Basin west of and along 1-25 has
beeo highly developed for residential and commercial use and other busi nesses_ Accessroads
and residential lots were developed east of the interstllle, and further development in th is area is
expected 10 be minimal and localized. Th.e To\VT1 of Monument is also located weSI of 1-25 with
surrounding businesses and large 10! residenlhllllcas, The Town was founded during the lasI
century, and is well established bm without current pJans for expansion. The 1-25 interchange at
Monument is considered inadequate llIld may require replacement m the near future. This would
affect the drainages of Diny Woman Creek in the vicinity of the interchange freeway eros, ings.
lmmediately east of 1-25 a water supply reservoir (Lake Woodmoor), ha~ been
constructed on the Lake Fork of Dirty Woman Creek, and on other small tributaries drain into
this reservoir. Roads and some of the residential lots occur in the drainages. and bave i nterfered
witb the water regime and flow and the associated wetlands, The major land uses that presently
affect the natural resources, riparian zones and habitats along drainages and wetlands are
commercial, transportation corridors, roads and residential. There h at present little agricuilurc
orliveslOCk grazing in this basin.
The approximately one acre residential lots in the upper rcaches of the drainage east of
the inrer;tate have disturbed the natural seningthe least and have semi-nmural vegetation and
habitats. In mU,l ca>>es, the drainages have been undisturbed by eonstr.Jetion and removal of
grazing has allowed the vegetmion to establish to productive riparian. wetlands and wet meadow
habitats. Exceptions to this are the golf CO\lIT.e along the North Fork Diny Woman Creek and
several homesites alung the uppc:r portion of Crystal Creek immediately south of Woodmoor
Drive. The freeway and the Town of Monument occupy the southwestern lower areas in the
drainagcbasin(s),
The following paragraphs describe the wetland and vegetation types and a,sociated
habitats and wildlife ,pecics for distribution and present conditions. The natural resources were
Catagoril.ed and mapped On the aerial photographsprovidcd using the standard nomenclature for
resource mapping (fable 5-1) proposed by the Army Corps of Engineers, A shon description of
the mapping units or types is provided to accompany these maps.
