I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION

This study is part of the Urban Drainage and Flood Control
District's Work Program for 1973. The program is to compile
information and to evaluate, study, and recommend design
solutions to the drainage problems of specific basins.

This particular study has been concerned with the following
four basins:

. S.J.C.D. (North)--Basin 6100

. North Tributary to S.J.C.D. (South)--part of Basin 6200

. Downstream Reach (Kiewit Area) of Main Branch of
S.J.C.D. (South)--part of Basin 6200

. Direct Flow Basin 6100.5

The drainage boundaries and locations of these four basins are
shown on Figure 1.1 and define the study area of this report.

Originally, just the first two basins listed above were contracted
under this study. Those two basins have received a thorough
investigation involving hydrologic and hydraulic studies,
development of alternative drainage solutions, economic analyses
of construction costs and benefits, and environmental consider-
ations. The other two basins were added after the study began
and have therefore not been studied in as much detail. As a
result, most of the following chapters deal almost exclusively
with S.J.C.D. (North) and the North Tributary to S.J.C.D.
(South). The special studies of the Kiewit Area Basin and
Direct Flow Basin 6100.5 are documented in Chapters 7 and 8,
respectively.

Drainage problem solutions for all four basins have been
developed, as summarized in Chapter 2. These solutions were
formulated through the combined efforts of CH2M HILL and the
three agencies that initiated the study--the Urban Drainage
and Flood Control District, Arapahoe County, and Jefferson
County.

The study has been divided into a Phase A and Phase B. The
purpose of Phase A was to evaluate alternative solutions to
the flooding problems of the basins and to develop comprehensive
Major Drainageway Plans. The results of Phase A are presented
in "Major Drainageway Planning on S.J.C.D.--North, North
Tributary of S.J.C.D.--South and Direct Flow Basin 6100.5--Phase A,"
CH2M HILL, July 1975. Phase B, reported in this document, is

1-1
