Several endangered animal species are federally listed for th" State of

Colorado. With the exception of the black-foot:ed ferret:, none of these species

could be expected to occur in the spillway area, There is little likelihood that

the ferret could be found here either; however, their primary food s'ource. the

prairie dog, may be found in or near this area. ~lithout field studies to verify

their presence or absence. no positive statement can be IDi:lde about their status.

The only other impacts that could be expe,cl:ed from this alternative would

be those construction-related impacts such as air pollution and dust creation.

Such impacts would be only temporary in nature.

ALTERNATIVE 2 - CHUTE SPILLWAY IN EMBANKM.ENT

This spillway alternative would be c,onst:'l:ucted through the dam and would

consist of a reinforced concrete approach .:lab, ogee weir, spUhray chute,

stilling basin, and side walls. The impacts of such an al.ternative would be

essentially the same as those described for the channel spil.J.way in the left

abutment, alternative 4. These impacts inclucllE~ removal of the vegetative- cover

on the face of the dam, possible downs"tream overfloW' of flood welters, and

temporary noise, fumes, and fugitive dust being; created. No significant cultural

resources are known from this area.

ALTERNATIVE 3 - SIDE CHANNEL SPILLWAY IN LEFT..ABUTMENT

This alternative would include a spilh",y located in the left: abutment

founded entirely in the Denver Formation. IFlows into the spillway would be

directed through the embankment into a t:rough where the water would then be

redirected 90 degrees through a chute so that flood flO1os would run adj acent to

the embankment toe toward Cherry Creek.

The environmental impacts of this alternative would be essentially the same

as for the other abutment spillway alternatives 2 and 4. That is, some

downstream embankment face vegetation would be lost:; however I since this

vegetation is nonnative, it has low wildlife value, and it would be relatively

easy to reestablish following construction, Any aesthetic and construction-

related impacts would be only temporary and, therefore, not significant.
