Wall, slab, frost blanket, and slab anchorage is similar to the previous

alternative spillway designs. Stem heights of concrete walls range from 20 to

38 feet.

This alternative requires additional lands in the form of both fee title and

flowage easements. The land purchase would be necessary for that portion of the

spillway structure which is outside of the Government property.

The estimated cost of constructing this type alternative with and without

dam crest raises combined with usage of the existing spillway or blocking the

existing spillway is shown on table 14. Included are costs for land acquisition

and for flowage easements. Costs range from a minimum of $30.9 million for

alternate 4e, to a maximum of $65.3 million for alternate 4bi,

ALTERNATIVE 5 - CONSTRUCT CASTLEWOOD DAM

This alternative would include construction of an earth-rockfill dam on

Cherry Creek upstream from the Cherry Creek Dam combined with various spillway

options and dam crest raises at Cherry Creek Dam.

The location of the dam project was assumed to be close to the location of

the old Castlewood Dam site about 30 miles upstream from Cherry Creek Dam.

The dam would provide 20,000 acre- feet of water supply storage, 80,000

acre-feet of flood control storage, 23,500 acre-feet of surcharge storage and

would pass the full PMF with 5 feet of freeboard. The PMF routing through

Castlewood is shown on plate 29.

Plate 36 presents typical data for the Castlewood Dam project which have

been used to estimate costs for this study. Pertinent data for Castlewood are

also shown in Appendix C, The design and cost estimate was performed, by

Morrison-Knudsen Engineers, Inc., Denver, Colorado, for the Colorado Water

Resources and Power Development Authority in a report entitled "Task 3

Memorandum, Dams and Reservoirs," May 1987. The studies were performed as part

of overall water development plans for the State of Colorado,

52
