<br />Sandy or gravelly soils occupy the steep slopes. The high plains soils are <br /> <br />grayish-brown sandy loam to clay loam undE,rlain by sandy loams to clays. <br /> <br />Unconsolidated sand and gravel deposits of PlEdstocene age occur 1.n terraces <br /> <br />along the larger stream valleys, Thin alluvial deposits of recent age mantle the <br /> <br />lower terraces and valley bottoms, and thin eolian deposits of silt, clay, and <br /> <br />fine sand are widespread in the upper area. <br /> <br />The Cherry Creek basin is semiarid. Surnrners are warm and winters are mild <br /> <br /> <br />to cold. Temperatures range from about ,.10" F. to 100" F. The average annual <br /> <br />temperature is 48.1" F. Average annual basin precipitation is 16,3 inches, <br /> <br />Precipitation occurs primarily as rain and sometimes as cloudbursts during the <br /> <br />months of April through August, None of the maj or floods of record have occurred <br /> <br />as a result of snowmelt runoff. The length of the annual growing. season is <br /> <br />approximately 130 days. <br /> <br />Land use in the middle and upper basins upstream from Cherry Creek Lake is <br /> <br />primarily limited to cattle and wheat production. Vegetation is a combination <br /> <br /> <br />of cropland and midgrass prairie, with intermittent stands of ponderosa pine <br /> <br /> <br />forest and tallgrass prairie, Since World liar II, urban expansion into the <br /> <br /> <br />middle basin has progressed rapidly. Urban development: I primarily residential, <br /> <br />has reached the Cherry Creek Lake project area. <br /> <br />PROJECT DESCRIPTION <br /> <br />PROJECT LOCATION <br /> <br />The Cherry Creek Lake project is located in ArapahoE County on Cherry Creek <br /> <br /> <br />,~bout 11.4 miles above its confluence with the South Platte River in the heart <br /> <br /> <br />of the business district of Denver.
